August — Pew Pew Crew Drills

August — Month 8

Pick pistol, rifle, shotgun, or all three — whatever fits the session.

Pistol — Failure Drills

Setup: One or two targets at 5–7 yards. Named "failure to stop" because it simulates a threat that isn't going down from body shots alone.

Beginner

Fire 2 rounds into the center-mass box, then 1 round into the head box. Static, no par time, no draw involved — start with gun already up. 3 rounds per rep, 5 reps = 15 rounds.

Intermediate

Same shot sequence, but starting from the draw and within a par time. 3 rounds per rep, 5 reps = 15 rounds.

Advanced

Run the same 2-body/1-head sequence on two separate targets, with movement (a step or two) between them. 6 rounds per rep, 5 reps = 30 rounds.

Checklist

  • Eye protection (one per shooter)
  • Ear protection (one per shooter)
  • 1–2 targets (cardboard or rated AR500 steel)
  • Tape to mark center-mass/head boxes
  • Target stand(s)
  • Shot timer
  • Standard holsters
  • First aid kit
  • Ammo: 15 / 15 / 30 rounds per shooter (Beg / Int / Adv)

Rifle (AR-15) — Shooting on the Move

Setup: Open lane with two marked positions a few steps apart, target(s) downrange.

Beginner

Shoot from position A, walk to position B, shoot again. No par time, no shooting while moving. 4 rounds per rep, 5 reps = 20 rounds.

Intermediate

Fire while advancing toward the target, then fire while retreating. 4 rounds per rep, 5 reps = 20 rounds.

Advanced

Move laterally while shooting, transition to a second target mid-movement, managing the sling throughout. 6 rounds per rep, 5 reps = 30 rounds.

Checklist

  • Eye protection (one per shooter)
  • Ear protection (one per shooter)
  • 1–2 targets (cardboard or rated AR500 steel)
  • Tape to mark center-mass/head boxes
  • Tape or cones to mark movement lane/positions

Intermediate

Fire while advancing toward the target, then fire while retreating. 2 rounds per rep, 5 reps = 10 rounds.

Advanced

Move laterally while shooting, transition to a second target mid-movement. 4 rounds per rep, 5 reps = 20 rounds.

Bonus — Low-Light Movement (Pistol, Rifle, or Shotgun)

Same movement mechanics as this month's core drill, run with a light source in play.

Setup: Open lane, two marked positions, target(s) downrange, handheld or weapon-mounted light.

Beginner

Walk from position A to B with the light on the whole time, shoot static at each stop. No par time.

Intermediate

Same movement, but the light only comes on briefly at each stop to acquire the target before firing.

Advanced

Move continuously while managing light discipline, only illuminating the target right before firing. Par time.

Checklist

  • Eye protection (one per shooter)
  • Ear protection (one per shooter)
  • 1–2 targets
  • Weapon-mounted light or handheld flashlight
  • Shot timer
  • Closed-toe athletic shoes/boots
