June — Month 6

Pick pistol, rifle, shotgun, or all three — whatever fits the session.

Pistol — One-Handed Shooting

Setup: One target at 5–7 yards.

Beginner

Shoot a group of 5 rounds using only your dominant/strong hand, gun held normally. No par time — just building comfort shooting one-handed. 5 rounds per rep, 5 reps = 25 rounds.

Intermediate

Draw and fire 2 rounds strong-hand-only, then repeat drawing and firing 2 rounds using only your other (weak) hand. Par time applies. 4 rounds per rep, 5 reps = 20 rounds.

Advanced

Using only your weak hand, work through a malfunction clearance and a magazine reload, both one-handed. This is deliberately awkward — it's meant to simulate an injured strong hand/arm. 5 live rounds per rep (plus a dummy round to force the jam), 5 reps = 25 live rounds.

Checklist

  • Eye protection (one per shooter)
  • Ear protection (one per shooter)
  • 1 target (cardboard or rated AR500 steel)
  • Tape to mark center-mass/head boxes
  • Target stand
  • Shot timer
  • Standard holsters
  • Snap caps / dummy rounds (Advanced)
  • First aid kit
  • Ammo: 25 / 20 / 25 rounds per shooter (Beg / Int / Adv)

Rifle (AR-15) — Transition to Pistol

Setup: One target at 10–15 yards. Shooter needs both a rifle and a holstered pistol for this month.

Beginner

Rifle magazine is deliberately short-loaded so it runs empty on schedule. When it does, transition to the holstered pistol and fire 2 rounds. No par time. 2 rifle rounds + 2 pistol rounds per rep, 5 reps = 10 rifle rounds + 10 pistol rounds.

Intermediate

Same drill, within a par time. 2 rifle rounds + 2 pistol rounds per rep, 5 reps = 10 rifle rounds + 10 pistol rounds.

Advanced

Rifle is set up to jam (via a staged dummy round) instead of simply running empty, forcing a transition decision under par time, with a step of movement. 2 rifle rounds + 2 pistol rounds per rep (plus dummy rounds to force the jam), 5 reps = 10 rifle rounds + 10 pistol rounds.

Checklist

  • Eye protection (one per shooter)
  • Ear protection (one per shooter)
  • 1 target (cardboard or rated AR500 steel)
  • Tape to mark center-mass/head boxes
  • Target stand
  • Shot timer
  • Rifle sling
  • Pistol holster
  • Short-loaded rifle magazines (2–3 rounds each)
  • Snap caps / dummy rounds, rifle-caliber (Advanced)
  • First aid kit
  • Rifle ammo: 10 / 10 / 10 rounds per shooter (Beg / Int / Adv)
  • Pistol ammo: 10 / 10 / 10 rounds per shooter (Beg / Int / Adv)

Shotgun — Transition to Pistol

Setup: One target at 7–15 yards. Shooter needs both a shotgun and a holstered pistol for this month.

Beginner

Shotgun is deliberately short-loaded so it runs empty on schedule. When it does, transition to the holstered pistol and fire 2 rounds. No par time. 2 shotgun rounds + 2 pistol rounds per rep, 5 reps = 10 shotgun rounds + 10 pistol rounds.

Intermediate

Same drill, within a par time. 2 shotgun rounds + 2 pistol rounds per rep, 5 reps = 10 shotgun rounds + 10 pistol rounds.

Advanced

Shotgun is staged to malfunction (via a dud shell) instead of simply running empty, forcing a transition decision under par time, with movement. 2 shotgun rounds + 2 pistol rounds per rep (plus dummy rounds to force the jam), 5 reps = 10 shotgun rounds + 10 pistol rounds.

Checklist

  • Eye protection (one per shooter)
  • Ear protection (one per shooter)
  • 1 cardboard target
  • Tape to mark center-mass/head boxes
  • Target stand
  • Shot timer
  • Pistol holster
  • Short-loaded shotgun shells (2–3 per rep)
  • Dummy/dud shells (Advanced)
  • First aid kit
  • Shotgun ammo: 10 / 10 / 10 rounds per shooter (Beg / Int / Adv)
  • Pistol ammo: 10 / 10 / 10 rounds per shooter (Beg / Int / Adv)

Bonus — Optic Failure / Backup Sight Transition (Rifle)

A different kind of transition than this month's core drill: primary optic to backup iron sights instead of gun to gun.

Setup: One target at 15–25 yards. Rifle needs a red dot or primary optic plus mounted backup iron sights (BUIS) for this drill to apply. If the rifle doesn't have BUIS, this one can be skipped or swapped for a magnified-optic-to-red-dot equivalent if that's the setup.

Beginner

Start aiming through the primary optic, transition to the backup sights (optic simulated as "down" by the shooter closing one eye to the dot or flipping it off), fire. No par time.

Intermediate

Same transition, within a par time.

Advanced

Transition mid-string, after already firing a few rounds through the primary optic, forcing a faster recognition-and-switch under time pressure.

Checklist

  • Eye protection (one per shooter)
  • Ear protection (one per shooter)
  • 1 target (cardboard or rated AR500 steel)
  • Target stand
  • Shot timer
  • Rifle with both primary optic and functioning backup iron sights
  • First aid kit
  • Ammo: 10–15 rounds per shooter
