First Aid Doesn't Stop When the Bleeding Stops

Controlling life-threatening bleeding is always the first priority. Tourniquets, hemostatic gauze, chest seals — those are the tools that buy time when seconds matter. But once the immediate threat is managed, the work isn't over.

Most injuries don't happen in a sterile environment. They happen on the trail, at the job site, around camp, in a vehicle, or just going about a normal day. Dirt, gravel, debris, and contamination are part of the picture. A wound that isn't properly cleaned before it's closed is a wound that's going to cause problems later.

The principle is simple: clean before you close. Irrigation removes debris and reduces contamination. The prep razor clears hair from around a wound site. The tweezers handle what irrigation can't. The antiseptic towelette handles surface prep. The gloves protect both the patient and the person providing care.

The Color System: Blue Means Irrigation

Each week in this series, I pair an IFAK360 module with a First Tactical organizer pouch to show how the two work together. This week it's Module 2 and the First Tactical 6x6 Internal Organizer Pouch (Style 180032).

The 6x6 measures 6" x 6" x 2". That's a compact footprint, but it's enough space to organize the Module 2 contents cleanly without wasted room.

A few things I like about this pouch for this application. The micro-mesh clear face lets you see what's inside without opening it. The light-colored interior makes it easier to locate individual items quickly. The YKK zipper holds up to real use, and the oversized pull makes it easier to work with when your hands aren't at their best. The Quick Pull design allows one-handed opening, which matters when your other hand is occupied.
