Why I Vacuum Seal Every Kit

When you open an IFAK360 module, the first thing you'll notice is that it's vacuum sealed. Not just bagged — vacuum sealed. That's intentional, and it's worth explaining why.

Most kits you find online come in a zip pouch, a mesh bag, or a nylon roll. Those aren't bad storage solutions for a lot of things. But for medical equipment that needs to be ready at a moment's notice in any condition, they're not good enough. Here's my thinking.

Moisture is the enemy.

Sterile items don't stay sterile in a humid environment. Medications degrade faster with moisture exposure. Adhesives lose their bond. Gauze absorbs ambient moisture and can compromise packaging integrity over time. A zip pouch breathes. A vacuum sealed bag doesn't.

I live and work in the Pacific Northwest. Humidity is a real factor here. But even if you're in a dry climate, your kit might live in a car, a range bag, a hiking pack, a boat, or a garage. None of those are controlled environments. Vacuum sealing removes that variable entirely.

It protects the contents from the outside world.

A vacuum sealed module is essentially isolated from its environment. No dust. No debris. No contaminants. When you're in the field and you need to open that kit, everything inside is exactly the way it was when it left my workbench. That matters when you're reaching for a sterile gauze sponge with bloody hands in poor lighting.

The bags — and why they're different by design.

Not every module uses the same bag, and that's intentional.

The M1 Hemorrhage Control Module and M1-K9 Hemorrhage Control are sealed in 5mil non-resealable bags. That's a deliberate choice. When you need the M1, seconds count. You rip it open and go. There's no time to fumble with anything, and there's no scenario in a life-threatening hemorrhage where you're carefully opening a seal. The 5mil thickness gives it durability and puncture resistance. The non-resealable design gets out of your way when it matters most.

The M2 through M6 modules are sealed in 4mil commercial grade resealable bags. These work exactly like a heavy duty zip lock bag — press the seal open, use what you need, press it shut again. That's it. No equipment. No special tools. The bag is built to be opened and resealed over and over again. When you resupply a module, you put the new items in, press the seal closed, and you're done. The same bag keeps working every time.

A note on firmness — this is important.

Not every module will feel equally firm after sealing, and that's by design. Some bags pull down tight with very little air remaining and feel very firm. Others may feel slightly less compact — not because of a leak, but because of the shape and bulk of the items inside. A larger or irregularly shaped item leaves less room for the bag to compress fully, and a looser seal is actually preferable in those cases to avoid puncturing or crushing the contents.

What you're looking for isn't firmness — it's resistance. If the bag has any resistance when you press it, the seal is intact and the kit is good to go. If it's completely soft and collapsing inward with nothing pushing back, that's the signal to open it and check the contents. Don't confuse a less-compact bag with a compromised one. The design accounts for what's inside.

It extends shelf life.

Removing oxygen from the packaging environment slows the degradation of almost everything inside. That means your QuikClot hemostatic gauze, your BZK antiseptic towelettes, your medications — all of them are better protected from the moment they're sealed to the moment you open them.

It's how I'd want it built for me.

I've worked off rigs where the equipment was meticulously maintained and rigs where it wasn't. The difference shows up at the worst possible moment. When I'm building a kit that's going into someone's car, their hiking pack, or their range bag — and that kit might sit there for a year or two before it's ever needed — I want to know it's going to perform. The right bag for the right module is part of how I make that guarantee.

Every IFAK360 module leaves my workbench sealed, lot-traced, and dated. Not because it looks professional. Because it's the right way to do it.
